I, Ludicrous is a two piece popular music ensemble formed in in 1985 by ( b. 1957) and ( & quot; & quot; ) ( b. 1956) . The band sprang to notoriety at the end of 1987 when their debut flexi release ( ' ' ) reached Number 11 in ' s Festive Fifty.

Alongside Switzerland' s and Sweden' s , Germany' s were possibly the most influential band to come out of Europe during the 1980s. By taking the hard riffing and minor- key melodies handed down from masters like and , then infusing them with the speed and energy introduced by the burgeoning movement, crystallized the sonic ingredients of what is now known as .


Sadly, just as they were on the verge of breaking to a wider audience - - even flirting with American success - - the band' s meteoric rise was rudely interrupted by internal strife and a string of bad business decisions. These blunders kept them from ever regaining their original momentum, but took their hard- knock lessons in stride and continued to prosper in the international arena on their own terms. More importantly, they remained the benchmark by which most every band is still measured. were formed in Hamburg, Germany, by guitarists and , bassist , and drummer . Originally named and then before morphing into in 1982, they signed with Germany' s own fledgling Noise International two years later. With also handling vocals and the bulk of songwriting duties, the quartet recorded its self- titled debut mini- album in early 1985.


The full- length and the maxi- single followed the year after, and the media were soon buzzing over the band' s - fueled interpretation of classic . Countless fans across Continental Europe were also fast converting to the band' s cause, but remained dissatisfied with his singing ability, and felt needed a proper frontman in order to achieve their full potential. Enter teenage vocalist , whose high- pitched delivery followed in the footsteps of previous banshees like and . The new chemistry proved as explosive on- stage as it did in the studio, and with their classic lineup now intact, were ready for the big time. Returning to the studio in early 1987, the band emerged in May with , a landmark recording that remains arguably the single most influential album to date.


Its volatile combination of power and melody would inspire an entire generation of bands, and transformed into bona fide superstars all over Europe and the U. K. , even making tentative inroads into America at the time. The band toured relentlessly for the rest of the year and into 1988 ( including a lengthy opening stint with ) , but despite this manic work schedule, still found time to record the aptly titled . Released in September 1988, the record was another blockbuster that crashed the U.


Top 30, but its uneven songwriting ( especially from longtime leader ) revealed the beginnings of a major band crisis. ' s watershed performance at that year' s Donington Monsters of Rock Festival proved to be their crowning glory, but for , his dream come true also represented the culmination of his ambitions for the group. Shockingly, the guitarist soon announced his departure from the band he had helmed to the top, claiming that were now too big a beast for him to control. ( He would soon make a fresh start with a new outfit called , which, to no one' s surprise, sounded remarkably like . ) But the remaining members of weren' t about to let their shot at stardom slip away, and after drafting former guitarist , they got right back to work with a sold- out tour of the U. Impressed by the band' s momentum, giant EMI stepped in and offered to sign away from the ever troubled Noise Records, but in doing so, wound up igniting a legal dispute that would sideline the group for nearly two years. Several live albums ( " Live in the U.


K. " for Europe, for Japan, and " I Want Out: Live" for the U. S. ) were released to distract the fans during this hiatus, and the band obtained added support from the mighty management team ( , , etc. ) to boot. Confident that they' d accumulated little, if any rust from their extended layoff, finally returned to action with the oddly titled in 1991. But no amount of EMI or muscle could compensate for the scattered, unfocused songwriting that dominated the album. Furthermore, the band' s quirky attempts at humor had grown so forced that fans weren' t sure what to make of furious anthems with names like the title track and " Heavy Metal Hamsters. " The record bombed in no uncertain terms, as did its even more schizophrenic follow- up, .


Recorded in 1993 by an obviously shell- shocked band, its poor showing only exacerbated growing internal dissension, which culminated with the ousting of both ( off to launch a solo career) and due to drug- related physical and mental health issues. Fair- weather friends EMI and also decided to cut their losses at this time, leaving the shattered remnants of to fend for themselves. Attempting to regroup as fast as possible, brought in new singer and drummer to record 1994' s , a small but determined step in the right direction. Then tragedy struck, when former drummer - - a diagnosed manic depressive whose worsening condition had been partly to blame for his dismissal - - took his own life, throwing himself in front of a train near his native Hamburg. Shaken to the core but as driven as ever, dedicated 1996' s to their fallen friend, and, coincidentally, the album turned out to be the strongest since their glory years, doing much to resurrect their career.


The ensuing tour spawned the double- disc set and confirmed the band' s return to form as major players in the international arena ( in Europe and Japan, they were arguably bigger than ever) . continued to prosper with 1998' s , 1999' s celebratory covers album, and 2000' s , and not even the departure of longtime members and could slow them for long. Now regarded as elder statesmen of Euro- , celebrated their achievements with 2002' s greatest- hits set. This was followed by 2003' s , which introduced new guitarist and featured ' s guesting on drums until a permanent replacement could be found in ( ex- , , and many more) . left the group in 2005 and was replaced by drummer Dani Lble , who appeared on that year’ s critically acclaimed . arrived in 2007, and was followed by in 2010. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia, Rovi

One of the premiere names in the field of home- listening music, ' recordings retained the abrasive flavor of early pioneers and explored the periphery of even while coddling to his unusual ear for melody, the occasional piece of vintage synthesizer, and distorted beatbox rhythms. While his side projects - - including , , , , and - - have often emphasized ( or satirized) his debts to , , and , Paradinas reserved his most original and exciting work for major album releases as . Early LPs were based around the most ear- splitting buzz- saw percussion ever heard ( in a musical environment or otherwise) , with fast- moving though deceptively fragile synthesizer melodies running over the top.


As Paradinas began weaving his various influences into a convincing whole, his work became more fully developed ( though possibly not as exciting) , a fluid blend of breakbeat and with effects and the same brittle melodies from his earlier work. Born in Wimbledon ( though he grew up in several other spots around London) , Paradinas began playing keyboards during the early ' 80s and listened to bands like and . He joined a few bands in the mid- ' 80s, then spent eight years on keyboards for the group .


During that time, however, Paradinas had been recording on his own as well with synthesizers and a four- track recorder. When disintegrated in 1992, he and bass player bought sequencing software and re- recorded some of Paradinas ' old material. After the material was played for and - - the duo behind and as well as being the heads of Evolution Records - - they wanted to release it; recording commitments later forced and to withdraw their agreement, though by that time ( aka ) had also heard the tracks and agreed to release a double- album for his label, Rephlex Records.


The debut album for ( paraphrased from the side of a blank tape and pronounced " mew- zeek" ) was 1993' s .


The LP set the template for most of Paradinas ' later work, with at times shattering metal- cage percussion underpinning a collection of rather beautiful melodies. The Rephlex label was just beginning to flourish, with added journalistic attention paid to ' s recent , and though began to feature less in label- doings than co- founder Grant Wilson Claridge , later Rephlex work by , ( aka ) , and made it among the cream of home- listening labels. When began taking college more seriously ( something Paradinas had attempted briefly, from 1990 through 1992) , he officially bowed out of . Second album was scheduled to be released in mid- 1994, though only 1000 copies made it out of the gate. ( It was officially issued by Rephlex in 1996 after Paradinas served papers on the label. ) Paradinas ' first major- label release came later in 1994, after he undertook a remix project for Virgin Records. The EP was one of the most high- profile examples of the remix- by- obliteration movement, a burgeoning hobby for many producers in which a - song reworking would bear no resemblance to - - or trace of - - the original.


Though the EP was hardly a prime mover in the sales category, Virgin signed Paradinas to a hefty contract and gave him his own Planet µ sub- label to release his own work as well as develop similar- minded artists. Written into his own contract was a provision for unlimited recording under different names, and during 1995 Paradinas definitely took it to task: he unveiled three aliases and released as many albums in less than a year' s time. The nu- skool label Clear released his debut single as early in the year; it mined the fascination with Star Wars and music shared by producers like , and , head of Mo' Wax Records. Clear also released the first Paradinas alias full- length, ' s " Makes. ARacket" , later in 1995.


Although they were still audible, the LP downplayed his influences in favor of some rather cheesy synthesizer figures and a previously unheard debt to . The distortion re- appeared on Paradinas ' second LP of the year, by .


The first American- only release of a Paradinas album ( it appeared on ' s San Franciso- based Reflective Records) , its sound had the metallic feel of the first two LPs but with a less- dense production job.


Just one month after , Paradinas released his first proper LP for a major label, . The album included tracks recorded from 1993 to 1995, and though it was quite a varied album, the distance appeared to give it quite a disjointed feel. Paradinas spent 1996 releasing a second album ( for Warp) and his first as ( " Shaped to Make Your Life Easier" for Belgium' s SSR/ Crammed Discs) . Both LPs journeyed further down the queasy- listening route of the first record, with departures into ' 80s- style party and surprisingly straight- ahead .


He also owned a half- share in the Rephlex- released " Expert Knob Twiddlers" ( credited as ) , the fruit of Paradinas ' 1994 recordings with . Paradinas entered 1997 ready to undertake the most ambitious style makeover in his career; the fusion of his home- listening with the hypertensive rhythms of street- level . One year earlier, had released a single of schizophrenic noodlings ( " Hangable Auto Bulb" ) , and ' s project had provided the first convincing headphone act. Paradinas waded into the pool with " Urmur Bile Trax, Vols.


1& amp; 2" , a double- EP also released as one full- length compact disc.


Though the change- over wasn' t completely convincing, the next full- length more than made up for expectations. presented a complete synthesis of the many elements in Paradinas& # 039; career, from synth- jazz- funk and beat- box through to ambient- techno and . Though still unable to break through to a mainstream which had recently accepted and into the fold, Paradinas and were introduced to many fans after he toured America as the support act for chanteuse .
